How to Use Lite Tuition: A Student's Journey from High School to College

August 16, 20263 min read

One of the best things about Lite Tuition is that it grows with your student. A child at a private grade school, a public-school senior planning a graduation party, a college freshman, a trade-school student, they can all use it, and a parent can help every step of the way. Here is a simple guide to how the journey works, stage by stage.

Stage one: a tuition-based school

If your child attends a tuition-based private school, you can raise money toward their tuition. Private school tuition varies widely, from a few thousand dollars to well over $20,000 a year. Say a family's tuition runs about $15,000 for the year, or roughly $7,500 a semester.

You could run one campaign for the whole year, or a smaller campaign each semester, whichever fits your family. A parent can start and run the campaign for a younger student, or the two of you can do it together. If the school hosts its own Lite Tuition page, the campaign can live there. If not, you simply sign up as individual users. Either way, the money you raise is released to the school toward your child's education. Stage two: a public-school graduation

Not every student is at a tuition-based school, and Lite Tuition still has a place for them. A senior at a public high school can raise money for their graduation celebration, whether that is $1, $1,000, or more. When the campaign closes, the funds are released to the school the student is registered to, so the milestone is supported the right way. It is a wonderful alternative to gift cards and clutter, and a great way for family and friends to give something meaningful. See more ideas in our post on the best graduation gift.

Stage three: college or trade school

When your student moves on to college or a trade school, they can start their own campaign at any point to help fund their education. A year of college can range from around $11,000 for in-state tuition at a public university to $40,000 or more at a private one, and that is before books and housing. Trade and vocational programs often run from a few thousand dollars to $15,000 or more, depending on the field. Wherever they land, they can raise toward tuition and the real costs of learning with gifts from their community rather than loans, so they carry less debt into their future. How every campaign works

No matter the stage, the basics are the same, and they are simple:

  • The student or parent sets the goal and the timeframe when they create the campaign.
  • Friends, family, and community give during that window.
  • Whether or not the goal is reached, all of the money raised is released to the institution when the campaign closes.
  • Plan the timing: because the money comes out only when a campaign closes, choose an end date that lands before your tuition is due, and give it a little cushion so it arrives in time.
  • There is no loan and nothing to pay back, so every gift helps limit how much a family has to borrow.

This is worth planning around. If your school bills in two parts, once for the fall and once for the spring, it often works best to run a separate campaign for each, so each one closes ahead of that term's payment. A single year-long campaign is fine when the money is not needed until the end, but if a tuition payment is due partway through, set your campaign to close before that date so the funds arrive in time.

From a first day of school to a graduation cap and everything after, Lite Tuition is there for the whole journey. Ready to begin? Start a campaign, and if your school would like its own page, take a look at Lite Tuition for schools.
